The Shared Parenting Era Begins
The moment so many children and parents have dreamt of is here. The first state law declaring that children’s best interest is equal time with both parents takes effect today in Kentucky. Millions of dreams will be answered as state after state follows Kentucky’s lead by passing shared parenting laws.
Historic moments create historic opportunities. In honor of that, the nation’s three largest shared parenting groups are issuing their first ever joint statement under the name “The Shared Parenting Council”. Leading Women for Shared Parenting, The Fathers Rights Movement and The National Parents Organization provide a female focused group, a male focused group and a non-gendered group to bring balance and weight to the most important issue, shared parenting, that our families face today.
The Shared Parenting Council requests that state lawmakers nationwide enact joint custody equal parenting time laws similar to Kentucky’s. The words “joint custody and equally shared parenting time is in the best interest of the child” are common sense supported by research and should be enshrined in every state’s laws. States should include clearly defined protections against awarding unfit parents shared parenting.
We make this first ever unified request with the hope that states move quickly to enact shared parenting. Let’s not make children’s needs wait. Every child deserves both parents.
